Should I start with “wow” or “well, well, well”? Because of this article, for the first time ever I wonder what it was like for our children (4 of them) to grow up in our house. They are all adults now in various religious stages, to use your description. Also for the first time I don’t feel defensive about how we brought them up. And I have hope.
Both my husband and I were deeply involved in ministry, a black holiness Pentecostal denomination. I mention that because of the cultural difference in worship that lots of Christians are not familiar with. He was a pastor, the president of our church district, and the bishop of missions at the denominational level. He traveled extensively on behalf of the church. He technically still is those things but with the onset of symptoms of dementia his involvement has changed at all three levels. Of course, they all participated, too. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.
This is the first time I’ve considered my children probably have quite a few things to unlearn. By the grace of God, I am able to acknowledge and accept that. You know what? I feel freer on the inside than I have in a long, long time.
I uploaded this article and emailed it to my youngest daughter, with a note that it was about unlearning. I hope she will read it.
