People like you should have voted
2 Timothy 2, a worker approved by God
When I reached for my phone around noon “people like you should have voted” was the text message I saw from a close friend. I also noticed the text message came in at 1am on a Saturday morning.
I was fast to speak, slow to hear and without thinking, I responded;
“Please tell me you weren’t up thinking about politics at 1am on a Friday night.
If I did vote, my vote wouldn’t have benefitted your cause, as I would have likely sided with RFK.”
The sender knew I was not a fan of either Biden (subsequently Kamala) or Trump. Over 350 million people in this country and these were my options. I was both disappointed and angered by the level of corruption and rigging that have coopted our (predominant) two party system.
While this was not the main reason I did not vote this time around, these two disappointing options were a significant factor.
There were some additional back and forth between us. But the below conversation was the general representation of my side of the conversation. If there should be a reply, I will draft a new article and or update this one when it happens, to articulate her narrative.
Me: Most people vote for the side that is financially beneficial to them. I’m ashamed to admit this also includes me.
However, I am in the (rare and) unfortunate situation this time around where both of those options will cost me an equal amount of financial pain over the next 2-4 years.
Being that the financial factor is equally hurtful to me, the next consideration would have been to vote on what I believe to be the platform most consistent with my moral values.
Her: And Trump’s moral values are more consistent with yours than Kamala’s moral values?
