Another train of thought was triggered by this video. The man who flags up the best question to ask: "Is Jesus credible?" also said, "Jesus said," No one can come to God except through me."" (Jn 14:6)

What I'm going to say next in no way diminishes the message of this video, or the credibility of those involved. That's not what I'm getting at here at all. I think it's an wonderful insight this man has shared.

It's just that the phrase, "no ones come to God except through me" didn't sound quite how I remembered it. So I looked up Jn 14:6 in several versions of the Bible. In every version I could find Jesus actually said, "No one can come to the Father except through me"

So now I'm wondering, does that distinction - coming to God or coming to the Father - matter? Does it mean that people who don't know Jesus can actually experience some aspect of God? Now don't burn me as a heretic, but surely God is so omni- everything people can realise there is 'something out there', or 'something/a power' bigger than what they can rationally explain. Some people who know nothing of Jesus may experience a holiness, or 'otherness', a great power etc without knowing who it is. It can't be a personal relationship at that stage because there's no understanding of Jesus or our Heavenly Father. But an experience of God is something that happens - we know from testimonies. And even - now you will think I'm a heretic - some other religions may be reaching out to Almighty God, the Holy One without knowing about Jesus. Or they may have started this way. Now I'm not advocating uni whatsit - 'everyone-goes-to-heaven-whatever-because-God-loves-everyone.' I do know from Scripture that God is justice and mercy, not only mercy. (I'm not a very good evangelical, but I try! 😉) And I do know that the demonic does exist and does deceive. But....

So if anyone reads this and knows what I'm trying to get at, I'd appreciate a sound theological understanding of this verse and it's implications. Thank you.

YES! It's not about what we believe, trying to convince others. It's about whether Jesus is credible. Is what He said and what He did credible?

Is Jesus credible?

The difficulty comes when people don't want to accept the Bible as credible. That rather takes the rug out from under the argument. If the Bible is not taken seriously, or not trusted, you don't have to even look at whether you think Jesus is credible - you've effectively sidestepped the whole issue and can ignore any talk about Jesus. Of course, you can explain that the proofs for the Bible's authenticity are more than those for Shakspear's work (which is accepted as authentic but most folks). But then, you'll never argue anyone into believing in Jesus. It's the work of the Holy Spirit. If someone isn't ready to let the Holy Spirit work, then we keep praying, living and loving, waiting and believing.

But yes, I believe Jesus is credible. Absolutely!
